Youth Service and Literature Certification

As a librarian who caters to children and youth beginning with babies through young adults, I take pride in creating compelling programs, story times, and activities that will engage and delight my patrons, encouraging them toward a lifelong engagement with the public library in their community, instituting best practices from the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) and the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA).

Notable Classwork from Certificate:

LIS 518:
Book List Website
In this class, we covered Young Adult Literature, reading a variety of award-winning books in the YA category.  The culmination of this class was the creation of a book list tool for our teen patrons to use.  The Secret Slacker Society page seeks to help teens discover classic literature, using alternate sources, such as graphic novels, games and movies. Libguides such as this will be helpful in directing young readers into literature they might not typically pick up.

Baby Storytime

in our Studies in Children's Literature class, we created several storytimes for different ages. This storytime is for Babies, following Mother Goose on the Loose format. I do several storytimes each week, so this was helpful in adding to my repertoire.

LIS 501:
Pathfinder

This pathfinder was created as a group for the Reference and Information Service class, where we covered reference techniques.  We decided to build a Pathfinder for 90's films and referenced movies, books, and databases. This is a function that I will not use as often as a Public Librarian, but the ability to find what a patron is looking for and how to present it to them in a way that's helpful will come in handy.

Tech Guide - Novelist Plus

In Programming for Youth, a class that covered a variety of crafting and programming options, we created a roster of fully developed programs, including descriptions, purchase lists, advertising, and set-up guidelines for a year of monthly youth programs. This guide was critical for helping us understand the full range of things that need to be planned for, thought out, and completed for effective programming.

Examples:
Crime and Cocoa is a true crime cozy evening, where teens can gather, work through the details of a cold case, and compete to solve the crime while enjoying delicious hot cocoa.

Glow Paint Night
is a chance to let their inner artist shine. Using glow lights and neon paint, young artists can splash out, and create a marvelous masterpiece.

Resume and Interview Bootcamp is oriented toward high school upperclassmen who are looking to refine their resume and interview skills before hitting the job market.
For Library Instruction class, we created a series of technical support videos for libraries.  This example video walks patrons through utilizing the NovelistPlus website, available through the system where I work.  Being able to clearly walk a patron through a technical asset is paramount to our position as librarians and given the prevalence of Covid-19, being willing and able to do it remotely and digitally will continue to be a useful skill.

Library Blog

This Graphic Novel survey was helpful in creating a baseline understanding of the genre and providing excellent reading examples so we were able to provide reader advisory to youth, teens, and adults.  For this class, we created a Book Talk for several of our own selections.  This class has helped me as a librarian be better at reader advisory and has sparked a love of graphic novels.

In our Information Technology class, we were tasked with creating and understanding a variety of technical services and resources for patrons. For our final project, we created a profile and a blog. This is helpful for my career, as having a blog is an effective way to reach remote customers and connect with those we serve in the library.
